Tourist trap
After reading Ava's comments about Gringo tourists, I was thinking about the relationship between tourist and resident. I know Americans can act like total pricks on vacation, I've seen it myself, but what is the non-prick to do? Have the loud minority ruined it for all of us? Can I visit Paris without being despised? I believe I can, but it's more a case of guilty until proven innocent. I'm not very loud, nor is my dress so, I am respectful and courteous to pretty much everyone I encounter and so on.
So how does it work? Are we doomed to be hated the world over for one reason or another? Do residents make the distinction between frat parties, and nice people? I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.
Thoughts?

I've found the trick is to not look American. Then people won't automatically make assumptions. I never wear ball caps or tourist shirts and hope that I'm mistaken for a European or a Canadian.
But I still have fun. I got plenty loaded in pubs all over London with my buddies. We were probably loud, but we were in a drinking establishment ---- that's what they're for. We told stupid jokes and wore a horse head mask while on the tube in London. But we never insulted anyone or made them feel like we were superior in any way. In fact, we actually got a charge out of being the admitted lesser of the species while in Europe.
